The ultrasound tech kept trying to get a profile shot, but Bean was hamming it up, looking right into the "camera". There were occasional brief glimpses of the profile, as the Bean rolled all the way over, and then all the way back... just like Mommy.
On Friday, Bean was 3lbs, 6oz, and about 16 inches. About the 40th percentile, we understand, which made Mommy breathe a huuuuuuge sigh of relief.
But mostly, we loved the pudgy cheeks.
Were you breathing a sigh of relief because of some signs that pointed to certain concerns (perhaps related to the gestational diabetes)? I guess that since this isn't a routine ultrasound they were checking in with baby to see how he/she is growing with the diabetes diagnosis?

We were breathing sighs, all right, but more of awe than relief. The risk was less of having a big baby than of having impaired lung development because of the excess sugar. The risk would be even higher if the diabetes had been present longer, or if the sugar were not now controlled. So mostly, this was just an awesome opportunity to see our little Bean!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the great pictures. Those pudgy cheeks are adorable and, according to what I was just reading in the New Yorker, a good thing. "Human infants are unusually portly among mammals...presumably babies need the extra body fat to fuel their oversized heads." Who knew??

"A bear... grows portly without exercise" Despite the constant attack on Marcey's lower ribs, our Bean wishes to get out, exercise Bean's portly body and USE Bean's considerable brain. Talking about Bean is getting to be like talking about God. Won't it be great to just be able to use a pronoun???

Truly, English needs a neutral pronoun. Might we invoke "heesh", as in Yeesh???.. better than the hyphenate "he/she". That, without the hypen, sounds like someone who should live on a kibbutz. So... these are my boys... Moshe and Heshe.

ReplyDeleteRather than using pronous, which is awkward at the moment, why not use "this, that and those", as in:"Our Bean wishes to get out, exercise THAT portly body and use those considerable brains."(to paraphrase and suggest a solution for Kate's question above.) Great Aunt Ann
